Polarizing filters

Its about time I tackled this subject.  I wanted to make this all a video tutorial but its hard to talk about in a clear concise way.  My recent shot with the car from my garage reminded me of the importance of polarizing filters.  A lot of folks just getting started out probably are not really aware of them, and they only have certain limited uses.  Lets take a deeper look:

Whats the point?

I don't think that Macro photography is going to be a money maker for me.  Not many people will want to buy images of super close ups.  But this is where business meets pleasure for me.  Macro photography is a delight to shoot, a challenge technically and can create some images that you just couldn't create any other way.

quicky profile photo

I felt the need to update my profile photo.  I write for another blog called frivolousmotorsports.com and being car oriented I wanted my profile to reflect my passion for cars.

This meant cleaning out the garage a little and pulling the mustang out to take a picture.  I spent most of the afternoon looking for the keys and re-arranging the garage.  By the time I was ready I was tired and I sat in the middle of the garage and looked at the car for inspiration.  I was planning on doing a shot with a couple of rim lights and a third softlight as a key.  But as I looked at the car I realized that the sun was setting behind it and without moving the car I started to build the shot around it.

Mini Photo Walk

So the Family and I went out for a little photo walk Wednesday night.  It was cold, and it was getting late.  In fact I think we were shooting after sunset in Civil twightlight.  The cemetary is a popular place to shoot some photos because some of the old grave markers have some wonderful textures on them.  It was tough going though because shooting against the sky meant lots of exposure compensation.  I didnt take many pictures but this one really stood out to me.  No photoshop, just straight out of the camera.  Focus didnt quite hit the face but its still a nice grab, I think anyway.  It was nice to get outside and do something a bit different

a little fun with photoshop

So I was a little bored this evening, and I was thinking about how I dislike Apple and Apple products. Im not going to rant about the reasons its not that important (notice I didnt use the word hate - my feelings are not that strong). This idea popped in my head, and I thought it would be a fun little photoshop project.

The original painting is called the "Fall of Man" by Hendrik Goltzius.  I suppose in some ways its not just about Apple but humanities obsession with technology and materialism (and I'm about as guilty as anyone!)

The Fringe

With a title like that I could be talking about a lot of things. A TV show on the FOX network by one of my favorite directors? Those nasty colored fringes you get in high contrast areas of a photo?

Nope to find out more, click the read more link...
